LKAB Mine, Sweden
The world's largest and most modern underground iron ore mine is in Kiruna. At present the mining face is just less than 775 meters below ground.
To get there using a car or bus is a journey of approximately 10 kilometers, which takes nearly half an hour. Visitors to the mine are transferred to LKAB's new information centre, Info-Centre 540, which is at an older main level of 370 meters depth. The entire visitor facility is heated by Frico Elztrip.
Info-Centre 540 has a mining museum, a machinery museum, areas for mining demonstration, a café and a combined multimedia, film and lecture hall with room for a seated audience of 150.
