Air curtains create a comfortable working environment, reduce draughts, keep cold air out in winter months and conditioned air in during summer. They also maximize energy efficiency and conservation.
Wasting energy can be costly for the building’s occupier. Investing in air curtains can give a quick pay-back.
Air curtains create an invisible barrier which isolates different temperature zones without hindering the movement of people and vehicles. Models are available for optimal performance on openings ranging from small serving hatches to doors up to 6m high.
For the most energy-efficient operation, air curtains should be specified at the building, planning and development stages. In some cases, installing an air curtain after the building has been completed may mean a compromise and could mean reduced efficiency.
Whether for new build or retrofit installations, choosing the correct air curtain for the type and size of doorway is essential. Correct selection is usually straightforward. The air curtain should cover the width of the door and have an airflow to match the mounting height of the air curtain. Other factors which can influence sizing are the doorway’s exposure to wind loads, the volume of traffic and the type of entrance area, such as an office, reception or warehouse loading bay. Electrically heated, water heated or unheated units are available. Unheated units are used mainly in cold-store applications, where the air curtain effect is reversed to seal a chilled area.
Where looks are important it is imperative to select units which are stylishly designed. Another solution is a recessed air curtain. When installing these units sufficient airflow must be allowed plus an unobstructed outlet. Maintenance access should also be considered.
It is important to choose durable robustly designed units for long life, especially in demanding environments. They should also be easy to install and connect.
The simplest use a remotely mounted switch controlling output and fan speed. This control is most effective in areas of high traffic where the doors are always open. In other environments thermostatic controls may be used, or automatic activation using door switches. Air curtains are increasingly being linked to building maintenance systems.
